<image:title>Blog - The Rule of 3</image:title>
<image:caption>I spend a lot of time discussing the rule of three and decompression in my behavior programs. 90% of my clients are rescue dogs. It is important to note that not all rescue dogs come with baggage, but I still give every dog the same amount of grace. Let me add that this is a general rule. Some dogs need less and some dogs need much longer. Imagine you are dropped in a foreign land, you don’t speak the language. You are stripped of your identity, your name has been changed and you have nothing left to remind you of home. Of course you would be shell shocked and wouldn’t act like yourself. You would be struggling to figure out what people want from you and you might start to anticipate what is happening with stress and anxiety. Now, shift this back to your new dog. He doesn’t know what is happening. You gave him a new name but didn’t tell him. You gave him a new set of rules but he’s having trouble figuring them out. So instead of settling in, his anxiety amplifies. The best thing we can do with a new dog is allow them grace. We often treat dogs with a weird set of rules and expectations. We want them to be perfect in an imperfect world. Instead, shift your focus... focus on the dog you have, not the dog you anticipated and instead of setting rules, work on building that relationship. How long did it take your dog to decompress?</image:caption>

Some dogs with ball or tug drive would find throwing their tennis ball or a short 5-10 second game of tug the highest value reward, while other dogs would prefer to work for higher value foods like cheese, deli meat, or boiled chicken.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Myths About Training dogs with food rewards</image:title>
<image:caption>For example, when teaching loose leash walking, we start out by keeping a really high rate of reinforcement with the dog, and reward them for every couple of steps of walking on a loose leash. As time goes on and the behavior is really consistent in different environments and contexts, we will start rewarding just occasionally throughout the walk for good leash behavior. Sometimes we reward after 5 steps, sometimes after 30 steps. This also takes some pressure off of you and allows you to be able to be a little more relaxed with your rewards and enjoy your dog’s new behavior!</image:caption>

<image:caption>CO-OWNER & DOG WALKER Pronouns: He/Him DogDad is the grease that keeps Beth running and tries his best to keep her on track. He helps with the running of the business, assists with the training of dogs that come in for board and train as well as dog walking. DogDad is also the reason we can take separation anxiety dogs for boarding, he never leaves if we have one staying with us. Richard spent over 20 years in the fire service in the mid cities as a firefighter/paramedic, retiring out at Fire Chief. When Beth decided that it was time to start RYR, he dove in head first and is also working towards certifications in dog training.</image:caption>

<image:title>Liv Francis's Bio - Liv Francis</image:title>
<image:caption>Apprentice Trainer and Pet Sitter Pronouns: She/They Liv is a Dallas native and started in the pet care industry as Veterinary Technician at VCA Forney, where she assisted doctors and pet parents for three years. Liv met Beth when they were bringing their pets to pet hospital Liv worked at. She was always very inquisitive and was asking Beth questions about training and behavior. When Liv began having intra dog issues with her crew of dogs, she reached out to Beth for help. Liv always loved helping pet parents with questions about puppy and dog training, so decide that when it was time to make a change away from vet med to pursue a dog training career. She truly believes that dog training is more about coaching the pet parents in how to have good citizens in their home. When Liv isn’t shadowing Beth and Pet sitting, she is watching tv (Liv says: YES! that is a real hobby!) and reading. Liv has six dogs and two guinea pigs.</image:caption>
